Wine is the savior of the masses. When you have had a tough week there is nothing better than curling up on the couch with a nice glass of wine to take the edge of your troubles. To the Italians wine is considered so important that it is not regarded as an alcoholic drink but as food. In biblical times wine was so important that when at a wedding there was no wine to drink Jesus decided he would perform a miracle and turn some water into wine. When you consider all the miracles that Jesus could have performed, the fact that he prioritized wine so highly surely shows how important it should be to us today. Even look at the band UB40 they wrote a song called Red Red Wine which basically begs wine to help them through their troubles. The lyrics “Red red wine, stay close to me, don’t let me be alone” truly show how supportive wine can be in times of trouble.
Yet how far would you be willing to go, or pay, for a bottle of wine? While a cheap bottle can cost you only a couple of dollars we are all aware that wine can get pretty expensive too. As a wine ages its tastes different. The layers of flavor started to increase and for those wine connoisseurs, it can become even better. This can make wine incredibly expensive.
Let’s take a look at the most expensive bottles of white wine that can be purchased today. We are looking at white wine specifically because I and many others simply love chardonnay.
The most expensive wine that we could find dates all the way back to 1811 and is called Chateau d’Yquem. It is 80% Semillon and 20% Sav Blanc. White wine in theory should be expired long before now if it was that old. However, this wine is special. It was made with high quantities of sugar and so should last for centuries. This means that it will only get better with age and only get more expensive as well. If you were choosing a bottle of wine as an investment this would be a sure thing (although there is no guarantee that when you open it, it isn’t gone off already). This fancy bottle of wine will set you back a whopping $117,000. This is surely too much for a Friday night in front of Grey’s Anatomy but as an investment, it could still turn a profit.
If we move away from wines of ancient history the price does come down quite a lot but is still incredibly expensive. The next wine on our list would cost $6,000 and is called Domaine Leflaive Batard Montrachet Grand Cru. With a name that fancy you can start to understand why this chardonnay costs so much. Experts say that it is worth every penny. It comes from the finest wine producer in France and has notes of lemon and hazelnut. If you ever plan on a celebration with the perfect white, this may be it.
The third wine on our is called Domaine de la Romanee-Conti Montrachet Grand Cru and the experts say that with this wine you are not just buying a fancy name. They say it tastes simply incredible. With a long list of subtle taste expert note flavors of butterscotch, vanilla, orange peel, honey, and graphite. This splendid wine will set you back $5,000.
If you ever have the money and the appetite for expensive wine then you won’t go very wrong by purchasing these three. For most of though these wines are only a dream and we will only be able to splash out on that $19.99 bottle at our local supermarket. Don’t worry, if the wine helps you, then it is still a winner in my book.
