Angelina Jolie today is a woman of class and elegance. She does so much for humanitarian efforts around the world and has adopted so many children that it is sometimes easy to forget that she was once regarded as the sexiest woman in the world and it was all because of her bad girl image. To date, Angelina Jolie has 16 tattoos and while she loves every one of them, she has covered and changed a number of them too, showing that when you have enough money even permanent ink doesn’t have to be permanent. Let’s take a look at some of her most noticeable tattoos.
One of Angelina Jolie’s most famous tattoos was on her left arm when she broke into Hollywood fame. She was married to Billy Bob Thornton at the time and although he was 20 years older than her the pair seemed to get on very well. Angelina had a tattoo of a black dragon on her arm with the words Billy Bob written over it. The pair have since split and Jolie had Billy Bob part of the tattoo removed. The couple did seem to have a strange relationship at the best of times. They famously wore lockets containing the other person’s blood during their relationship.
Jolie got a different dragon tattoo while drunk in Amsterdam and also had that removed. Since then she has brought a little more sense to her ink work. Today many of her tattoos are in reference to her children and a new partner. She has the coordinates of her children’s birth tattooed on her and possibly (although unconfirmed) the coordinates of Brad Pitt’s birthplace too. She has a Khmer script tattooed as well that offers protection for her son.
However, the first tattoo that Angelina Jolie got is one that she has never removed and perhaps describes her best. She was on a road trip with her mother and was being told about the wonderful work of the playwright Tennessee Williams. When her mother read one quote, in particular, Jolie was immediately won over. The quote was “A prayer for the wild at heart kept in cages”. This quote spoke to Jolie about who she was and about the people she resonated most with.
Jolie says that the tattoo tells her that her wild spirit is part of who she is and nothing something to be afraid of. This wild spirit can be seen in her early relationships and her early behavior. It can also be seen her more mature presence now where she is no longer posing on the red carpet but going against the status quo and trying to address humanitarian issues across the world. Clearly, her wild spirit can not be contained in any way.
Jolie also has a Japanese tattoo that means death. She says that it reminds her to live and is something that she is glad is a part of her. Another tattoo that Jolie has is a black cross with the words “What nourishes me, destroys me” written in Latin beside it. These words again speak to who Jolie is and how she lives her life. Although she has all the money in the world she hasn’t let it corrupt her spirit. She knows that if she is too good to herself she will lose her personality so instead, she focuses on helping others.
Jolie has so many tattoos and in many ways, they cover the course of her life and the outlook that she has on the world around her. As she gets older the tattoos now speak to her children and how much she cares about them. Jolie is no longer topping the Sexiest woman alive charts but her spirit, caring nature and attitude make her more beautiful than ever.
