If red lip color is about as vibrant as your makeup gets typically, prepare to shake things up because there was an absolute explosion of color in the autumn/winter shows backstage – and it was all about eyes. From bright blue and hazmat orange liner to scarlet eyeshadow and mascara in shades that we didn’t even know existed, those looks were extremely bold.
Top 2020 beauty trends bring back the days when it’s all about skin, bright lips, and bold blush — but you’re not going to set aside an extra hour to get everything done. Bad taste is the new way to wear color, but it still looks beautiful.
How do you take these insane designs from the catwalk and make them tasteful?
The key is to take saturated shades and apply them more subtly, so you get all the payoff color and no weirdness.
4 Colorful catwalk influenced looks to work for you:
- Hotlines
“Clean, simple and easy to wear” is how MAC maker Lucy Bridge described the look. We’re not sure that thick yellow and red eyeliner rings count as wearable in your book, but surely the colors are beautiful. Bright yellow, deep red, and bright blue have been looked at as creamy, saturated liner. Take a highly pigmented cream eyeliner to tone down this out-there look and add it right on the lash line in a sleek, straight flick instead of a thick floating line. Models lashes were left bare on the catwalks, but adding lots of black mascara to your bright liner helps slightly diffuse the color.
- Lash clashing
Make-up artist Peter Phillips gave enormous fake eyelashes in no less than eight different colors, including neon purple, dark green, violet, and brick red. Colored mascara has been having a comeback lately (still another Nineties throwback), so you have a whole range of options, but royal blue and forest green are your best bet for beginners. Keep your remaining eye makeup neutral and let your lashes talk.
- Bold blush sweeps
This style was all about inspiration from the Eighties at the shows of ‘Lulu Guinness and Ashley Williams’, where pink-red powder worked as both blusher and eyeshadow, buffing from the eyelids to the cheeks.
- If you’re used to pale peach blusher, this look may be a bit scary.
- If your skin has red undertones, it’s best avoided, but a red-tone smoky may be flattering.
Experiment with a palette, start with lighter shades and head up at the outer corner of your eye to brick red or burgundy. Yet again, this look was bare lashes on the catwalks, but a few coats of your favorite black mascara would add definition.
- Pops of glitter
Glitter is also making a comeback in 2020. It’s not like full-glitter lids though, just glittering pops. Glitter with a glitter adhesive, like the one from Anastasia Beverly Hills, is better used. It makes it easy to use with a stunning hold.
Wrap up
Blue Mascara and Yellow Eyeliner can also be stylish and wearable. (Believe it or not). How the ‘Bad Taste’ beauty trend work is explained above by the catwalk influenced looks.
